Is this expectation actually from my deen, or from my culture?

Picture a woman running a small business from her spare room, and an aunty telling her a woman's place is only in the home. That instruction feels religious. It isn't — it's cultural, wearing religious language. Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her) was one of the most successful traders of her time, and the Prophet ﷺ worked for her before they married. Trade wasn't the problem then. It still isn't now.

Here's a simple way to tell the difference: ask whether every righteous, God-fearing Muslim across every land and century would have done it the same way. If the answer is no — if it changes by country, by decade, by family — it's very likely culture, not deen. What's actually revealed and binding is a much shorter list than what gets defended in its name.
