Inheritance vs. Culture

Inheritance is what was revealed, and is binding — it doesn't change by country or century. Culture is what was practiced, and is contextual — it changes constantly, even between two Muslim households on the same street.

The confusion happens because both get passed down the exact same way: by people who love you, with complete conviction, often in the same sentence. A mother teaching her daughter to pray and teaching her daughter that ambition is immodest can sound like one lesson. They aren't. One is deen. The other is inherited opinion, dressed the same.

Telling them apart isn't about doubting your faith — it's about finally being able to see it clearly enough to actually keep it.
