Fatima al-Fihri Built a University Because Her Faith Told Her To

She didn't build something enduring instead of living her faith. She built it because of it — and it's still teaching students, over a thousand years later.

In 859, a woman named Fatima al-Fihri used her inheritance to found what is now recognized as the oldest existing, continually operating degree-granting university in the world — the University of al-Qarawiyyin, in Fez. Her sister Mariam built a mosque in the same city, around the same time.

Fatima didn't build this on the side of her faith, or in spite of the expectations placed on her as a woman of means. She built it as an act of worship — a gift to her community, funded by what she'd been given, sustained for over a millennium. Ambition and devotion weren't two competing demands she had to balance. They were the same motion.

This is what's possible when a life isn't asked to choose. Not a smaller life. Not a compromise between two things pulling in opposite directions. One whole thing, built on purpose.
